2021

The BSC Academy 21 is scheduled for 18-21 March 2021.

This year the BSC has invited the Brussels saxophone quartet Scarbo. The quartet of Belgian origin is joined by Rui Ozawa (JP) and Mario Marzi (IT). Rui Ozawa is a Japanese saxophonist, Paris Conservatory graduate and recent laureate of, among others, the international Adolphe Sax competition in Dinant, Belgium. The Italian Mario Marzi is a well-known saxophonist with many CD recordings and an excellent position at the ‘Conservatorio G. Verdi’ in Milan to his name.

Masterclass participants can play in the Participant Ensemble led by Wouter Versavel. The ensemble is part of the programme during the closing concert with some solo works and the guest soloists. Participants can register without obligation.

What an exciting atmosphere! A fantastic event for the saxophone, for the music, for the friendship, for sharing your passion. An incredible project.

Our guest artists

After Pieter, Asagi, Nele and Bart had each taken a unique international musical journey, jointly they found a passion for music and the crossover with other arts. This led them to set up the saxophone quartet Scarbo, inspired by the poem of the same name by Italian-born French poet Aloysius Bertrand, about a little devil who hides in the shadows, waiting to appear with a virtuoso pirouette and to disappear into the darkness again afterwards. Based in Brussels, they collaborate with top local artists; for example, with Yuika Hashimoto from Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s dance company ROSAS. Their diverse cultural and artistic backgrounds create a climate of creativity and cross-fertilization.

The individual members of Scarbo have a long list of international awards to their name and have already worked with many ensembles and orchestras including: Antwerp Symphony Orchestra (BE), Brussels Philharmonic (BE), Spectra Ensemble (BE), Ensemble Intercontemporain (FR), Symfonieorkest van de Koninklijke Muntschouwburg (BE), Bl!ndman (BE), P.A.R.T.S (BE), het Collectief (BE), Nadar Ensemble (BE), Filharmonie Japan (JP), Tokyo Philharmonic (JP), Filarmonica della Scala (IT), Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester (DE), Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (IT), Wiener Jeunesse Orchestra (AT), NtGent (BE), Belgrade String Orchestra (SR), Odessa Chamber Orchestra (UKR), One Trick Pony (BE), Vokalconsort Berlin (DE), Koninklijke muziekkapel van de Gidsen (BE), ISOLISTI (BE), Ictus (BE), Orchestra Philharmonique Royal de Liège (BE), Theater Aachen (DE).

Mario Marzi, winner of nine national and four international competitions, has performed with the most important symphonic orchestras, including the ‘Orchestra Sinfonica RAI di Torino’, ‘Accademia naz. di Santa Cecilia’, ‘Arena di Verona’, ‘Teatro Comunale di Firenze’, ‘Teatro La Fenice di Venezia’, ‘Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana’ and the ‘Caracas Symphony Orchestra’. For the past twenty years he has collaborated with the ‘Teatro alla Scala’ and with the ‘Filarmonica della Scala’ led by the current top directors R. Muti, C. M. Giulini, G. Prètre, L. Maazel, L. Berio, S. Bychkov, G. Sinopoli, W. Sawallisch, M. W. Chung, G. Dudamel, C. Abbado, R. Chailly and D. Harding. He often plays with Mr Riccardo Muti and is regularly invited to join a concert tour with Mr Zubin Mehta and the ‘Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino’. He has played at famous national and international festivals such as the ‘Venice Biennale’, ‘Settembre Musica’, ‘La Scala di Milano’, ‘Accademia Filarmonica di Roma’ or the ‘Ravenna Festival’. Other concerts have taken place in Salzburg, Athens, Madrid, Saint Petersburg and Mexico City and in prestigious halls and theatres such as the ‘Carnegie Hall’ in New York, the ‘Suntory Hall’ in Tokyo, the ‘Gewandhaus’ in Leipzig, the ‘Musikverein’ in Vienna, the ‘Schauspielhaus’ in Berlin, the ‘Lacma Museum’ in Los Angeles, the ‘Grand National Theatre’ of Beijing, the ‘European Parliament’ in Brussels, the ‘Cajkovskij Hall’ in Moscow and the ‘Liceu’ in Barcelona, etc.

He dedicated himself to the 20th century repertoire and several of the most significant contemporary works for saxophone are dedicated to him. He made recordings for EMI, Edipan, Stradivarius, Agorà, BMG and Sony Classical. His CD containing the great saxophone concertos for soloist and orchestra, which he recorded with the ‘G. Verdi Symphony Orchestra’ conducted by H. Schellemberger, was recently released in Italy by Amadeus and has now been released internationally on ARTS (Munich). He is a Rico endorser.

Marzi teaches saxophone at the conservatory ‘G. Verdi’ in Milan, gives postgraduate courses and masterclasses in Porto, Lisbon, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Beijing, Vienna, London, Washington, Sydney, Denver and Caracas, within the Abreu project (El Sistema). As jury member in the main competition for the saxophone, including Dinant in 2010, he is responsible for Italy at publisher Gerry Mulligan's publishing company. He is also the author of several educational scores for Carisch. His book Il Saxofono (Zecchini Ed.) was published in October 2009. Sky Classica dedicated an episode of the musical programme ‘Notevoli’ to him.

Rui Ozawa, Japanese saxophonist, began her studies at Senzoku University of Music in Japan and integrated afterwards at the Conservatory of Music, Dance and Theatre of Cergy-Pontoise (CRR), France. 2020

For their very first edition in February 2020, the BSC invited Vincent David and Lars Mlekusch as guest lecturers. In addition to masterclasses, the guest artists gave several amazing solo recitals and partners Selmer and D'addario provided instructive presentations. The week concluded with a concert by the Belgian Saxophone Choir (BSC) at the international centre for arts ‘deSingel’, in Antwerp.

During the 2020 edition, the BSC had the pleasure of welcoming saxophonists from the Netherlands, Germany and France.
